Wine of Valdepeñas
CHARACTERISTICS
The wines of Valdepeñas possess the personality of a unique region, with a climate of extreme temperatures, and soil lacking in organic materials and hardly fertile: ideal conditions for growing vines. The white varieties cultivated are Airén, Macabeo, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc,Moscatel de Gran Menudo(Muscat family), and Verdejo. Among the red varieties figured there areCencibel(Tempranillo),Garnacha(Grenache), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Petit Verdot. From the ripe fruits, the D.O. Valdepeñas obtains young white and red wines, going through carbonic maceration, fermented in oak barrels, andcrianza(aged one year). In addition there are semi-dry, semi-sweet, and sweet whites, reds, and rosés.
AREA OF PRODUCTION
Bordered by the fields of Montiel, Calatrava, and Sierra Morena, with the Jabalón River cutting through it, the D.O. Valdepeñas has its center in Valdepeñas, a locality that includes Alcubillas, Moral de Calatrava, San Carlos del Valle, Santa Cruz de Mudela, Torrenueva, and, partially, la Torre de Juan Abad, Granátula de Calatrava, Alhambra, and Montiel.
