Located in the city centre, Valdepeñas Local Museum was opened in June 1987, after the restoration and remodeling of a manor house of the 16th century.
On its ground floor the visitor will be able to see rooms dedicated to the local painters; among them we can remark Óscar García Benedí, Ignacio Crespo Foix and Francisco Nieva. It is also remarkable the archaeology section, which focuses mainly on the findings coming from diggings that has been carrying out since 1985 in the Iberian city of Cerro de las Cabezas.
Cerro de las Cabezas is 8 km. away from Valdepeñas. The city was inhabited between the 6th and 2nd centuries BC. Its foundation and wainscot of the outdoors wall are in excellent conditions. It is unique in Spain. The reasons of its abandonment are unknown. It is accessible and can be visited.
The first floor gathers up the Contemporary Art collection, result of Valdepeñas Plastic Arts International Exhibition –the most important of those which are celebrated in Spain and Golden Medal in Fine Arts merit since 2001– a collection considered as a one of the most important in Castilla-La Mancha.
