MANZANARES MANCHEGO CHEESE AND ART COLLECTION MUSEUM

Manzanares (Ciudad Real)
The first Manchego Cheese Museum around the world
Museo del Queso Manchego y Colección de Arte de Manzanares
Visit

The first Manchego Cheese Museum around the world invite to an original tour based on photographs, audiovisual aids and cheese-related and livestock tools that underline the historic importance of the livestock in our town and the characteristics and production process of Manchego cheese, before and now, artisan or individual. Its different rooms –wine cellar, stables, winery, warehouses, kitchen, function rooms, living rooms and transit areas– make the museum different.

This Museum has several rooms around the farmyard. One of them is called “Manzanares, tierra de pastores” (Manzanares, land of shepherds) and shows the historic importance of this intersection of roads and cattle routes intended to transhumance of the merino sheep, an economic source of the past. The room “Pasado, presente y futuro” (Past, present and future) shows the production process of the Manchego Cheese and its evolution.

The ancient winery of the wine cellar is turned into a Tasting Room for learning to identify and to taste a Manchego Cheese with protected designation of origin.

The Museum has also a conference room and a shop where it is possible to buy Manchego Cheese with protected designation of origin, white wine of the town and different souvenirs.

The change of the Manchego Cheese Museum to the Art Collection is made by means of a space dedicated to the cheese in the Art and the Literature. A copy of the book “Don Quijote de la La Mancha” is shown in a glass cabinet next to a kitchen manual of 19th century called “Practicón”. It is possible to observe in this same space duplicates of two still life of Meléndez where the cheese is the star.

The “Casa de Malpica” houses the Art Collection in the residential area, a place that preserves several original elements like the hydraulic floor tile, marble and forge fireplaces, bases and vault ceilings.

On the ground floor, around the modernist courtyard, the temporary exhibition hall is located.

In the first floor the Permanent Art Collection is shown. It is a place where award-winning works in the National Contests of Painting and Photographs that are celebrated since 1975 and 2006, as well as a donated work and other artistic disciplines can be observed. Some of the awarded artists are Ignacio Crespo Foix, Juan Sánchez, Jesús Cortés Caminero, Patricio Caba, Pedro Morales Elipe, Alex Serna, Eugenio Bermejo, Giordano Vaquero Campo, Alex Campoy, Michael Finn, Klaus Oshman, Eugenio Ocaña, Pepe Carretero, Mónica Dixon, Pedro Pérez Villegas o Guillermo Sedano, among others.
