MAIN ATTRACTIONS

The southeast of the province holds, at 86 km from its capital, an authentic jewel in the municipal district of Villafranca de los Caballeros. This town finds itself situated next to an important area of salty lagoons, at the confluence of the Cigüela and Amarguillo Rivers. The lagoons have been utilized since the time of the Iron Age until now; in the 18th century they were exploited to fabricate gunpowder. On a visit to this town we must highlight the church of the Assumption and among its hermitages, that of Santo Cristo.

WHAT WE’LL SEE

The church, located on Cervantes street, was built in the 12th century and renovated in the 16th and 18th centuries. It has a Latin cross floor plan and offers the visitor a beautiful colorful exterior, for the type of stone used in its facades. Inside, the Gothic ribbed vaulting that covers the central nave stands out, in addition to the beautiful baptismal font from the 15th century, and a silver monstrance from the 19th century. At a little more than five minutes walk from here we find the hermitage of Santo Cristo de Santa Ana,  built between the 16th and 17th centuries. Here our attention is drawn to its precious Baroque facade and in the interior to the frescos of the dome and its walls. All the pictorial decoration is from the 18th century.
